Relationship-based Training for Early Head Start Home Visitors

The 2007 Head Start Act states home visitor training must focus on:

  • Structured, child-focused home visiting that promotes parent’s ability to support their children
  • Strengths-based parent education
  • Infant/toddler child development
  • Methods to promote emergent literacy
  • Strategies to determine health and developmental services
  • Strategies for crisis intervention and,
  • Prenatal health and well being

This 3-day intensive workshop support staff in many of those areas.

Based on Linda Kimura’s book “Babies Can’t Wait: Relationship-based home visiting”, it provides a substantial base for the EHS home-based program option, focused on best practices as developed by the Program for Infant/Toddler Care  (PITC) at WestEd.

Training is practical and concrete – a nurturing, supportive environment that encourages participants to bridge theory into practice. Participants leave excited about home visiting and eager to try new techniques such as:

  • Specific and practical methods for organizing home visits that support their agency’s chosen curriculum. (The BCW 4-Step Home Visit Model)
  • Observation and recording of parent-child interactions. (The BCW CHECKLIST)
  • All aspects required for home visiting in the home-based program option.
  • Each participant receives a 100-page Workbook Manual.
  • Music every day – Linda brings her ukulele and teaches new songs, including her signature song, “The Babies Can’t Wait Home Visitor Song”

We will take up to 25 participants in a training.  Smaller programs are encouraged to invite other programs to join them, thus reducing costs to each.

The famous (infamous?) Babies Can’t Wait Home Visitor Song
lyrics©2002 L Kimura. Melody: traditional (Polly  Wolly Doodle)
sung at every Babies Can’t Wait training

Oh I had some tea, and I found my keys
Making home visits all day
Gassed up my car, and bought a candy bar
Making home visits all day

I feel good! I feel good!
I feel reallllllllllll good today
And I’m never latem ’cause Babies Can’t Wait
Making home visits all day

Oh I brought some dental stuff, and nutrition stuff
Making home visits all day
Child development is fun, we work till we are done
Making home visits all day

I feel good! I feel good!
I feel reallllllllll good today
And I’m never late, ’cause Babies Can’t Wait
Making home visits all day

Oh I don’t need a card, but I work real hard
Making home visits all day
And when we are done, we’ve had a lot of fun
Making home visits all day

I feel good! I feel good!
I feel reallllllllllll good today
And I’m never late (WHY?) ’cause Babies Can’t Wait!
Making home visits all day!
